The direct impact of the repression on me was that I did not want to know anything about what was happening around me, I liked to play the ostrich, it was maybe cowardly but so relaxing. I was not risking anything because I did not mind anything until the day I wore the headscarf…I understood that this simple gesture was considered by the totalitarian regime of Ben Ali an act of rebellion and defiance against the State, even if I did not adhere to any political party or any dissident group. We had lived in a big prison without bars, but still a prison, oppressive and suffocating.
